John McNair Uneasy Ahead Of 2011 Doomben 10,000

May 26th, 2011

With Hay List the obvious short priced favourite for the 2011 Doomben 10,000 this Saturday May 28, 2011, trainer John McNair is beginning to feel the stress.

The trainer is constantly concerned that Hay List will take a turn for the worst before this weekend’s Doomben 10,000.

“I just want to get it out of the way,” McNair said.

“I would have preferred Peter (Moody) to pull the plug on Black Caviar this Friday, rather than a week and a half ago.

“I keep waiting for something to go wrong.”

While McNair has assured the public that Hay List is currently in good shape, three days could make all the difference.

“Everything is perfect at the moment and he’s as happy as he’s been, but there’s still another three days to go and things can change pretty quickly with him,” he said.

“It would be nice if they could run it today.”

McNair has conducted the last of Hay List’s 2011 Doomben 10,000 pre-training, with the five-year-old Statue Of Liberty gelding being given a well-deserved break until the race.

“I don’t need to do much more with him now because to my eye he is perfect,” McNair said.

The trainer was disappointed when he saw that only eight other runners were willing to step and compete against Hay List in the 2011 Doomben 10,000.

The reduced field numbers is sure to escalate Beaded’s chances in the race, with McNair naming her as his biggest threat.

“I would have liked to see a few more runners in the field to make it harder for Beaded,” McNair said.

“She doesn’t have to go around as many horses now, but I suppose if my bloke turns up at his best it shouldn’t matter.”

Doomben course manager Bill Schuck gave Doomben Racecourse a slow 6 rating yesterday, however, he believes that the track will be upgraded to a dead 4 by Saturday.

McNair is hoping that a dead 4 will be as dry as the ground will get.

“A dead 4 would be perfect but I wouldn’t like to see it improve much more than that,” McNair said.

Hay List is currently also nominated for the $1 million Stradbroke Handicap on June 11, but McNair will not say if he will run until after the 2011 Doomben 10,000.

“We will see how he pulls up and if he’s OK then the other race (Stradbroke Handicap) is there.

“If not, we will just as happily pack up and go home.”

In other horse racing news Beaded arrived in Queensland on Sunday and is preparing herself to take on Hay List in the 2011 Doomben 10,000.

Darley racing manager Trevor Lobb believes Beaded will give Hay List a run for his money despite drawing barrier seven in the race.

“She will be better suited in the Stradbroke, but she’s never ever put in a bad run and we’re more than happy with her,” Mr Lobb said.

“Drawing 7, she will still be very competitive.”

Robert Heathcote’s Buffering has drawn the second widest barrier of the field, being allocated gate eight.

“I’m a bit disappointed, but I think there’s a way around it,” Heathcote said.

“Border Rebel is likely to go forward with Hay List.

“So maybe that gives us an option of popping in third, one off the fence.”
