Purton to Ride Fell Swoop in 2016 Doomben 10,000

May 24th, 2016

Matt Dale is hopeful the return of Hong Kong-based hoop Zac Purton to the saddle will allow a breakthrough win at the highest level for Fell Swoop, when the talented sprinter lines up for the 2016 Group 1 Doomben 10,000 (1350m) in Brisbane on Saturday.

Fell Swoop has returned to racing in career-best form this time, but undoubtedly produced his most impressive and convincing performance to date when Purton was in the saddle for second behind Chautauqua in the Group 1 TJ Smith Stakes (1200m) on Day 1 of The Championships in early April.

Fell Swoop was caught wide in running before finishing a luckless fifth in the Group 1 BTC Cup (1200m) at Doomben a fortnight ago, but Dale is confident the son of Not A Single Doubt will relish a step-up to 1350m, particularly if he fares well at Wednesday’s barrier draw for the 2016 Doomben 10,000.

“Fell Swoop’s peak performance was when second behind Chautauqua in the TJ Smith and Zac was aboard for that, so when I found out he was available it was an opportunity too good to refuse,” Dale said.

“Zac cut his teeth in Brisbane as a young jockey so knows Doomben well, which is important on such a quirky track.

“Gates are so important at Doomben. We were certainly disadvantaged from the wide barrier last Saturday so hopefully we draw more favourably in the 10,000.

“He has recovered quickly from the BTC Cup and is looking for the extra distance at this stage of his campaign.”

Fell Swoop has undoubtedly been the stable star for Dale through his entire fifteen start career since first appearing on course competitively in 2014; posting an impressive nine wins and three minors.

Capping an impressive 2015 campaign with consecutive wins in the Listed Cup Club Stakes (1200m) and Listed Testa Rossa Stakes (1200m), Fell Swoop was given little chance of success in the Group 1 Oakleigh Plate (1100m) first-up this time, but mustered an impressive late turn of foot to finish an agonizingly-close second in a photo.

Progressing to a luckless fourth in the Group 1 The Galaxy (1100m), Fell Swoop followed up his close second in the TJ Smith Stakes with a comfortable win in the Group 2 Victory Stakes (1200m) on April 30th.

The 2016 Doomben 10,000 field and barrier draw is due to be completed and released by midday, Wednesday.
